EDA SPRING CONFERENCE 2009

SUMMARY OF THE EDA SPRING CONFERENCE IN NICE Lé Méridien 4th-6th June 2009

A HUNDRED DELEGATES GATHERED IN NICE TO
DISCUSS LATEST DEMOLITION DEVELOPMENTS AT EUROPEAN LEVEL

Nearly a hundred delegates from 9 different European countries gathered last 4th-6th June at the European Demolition Association's (EDA) General Assembly and Spring Conference 2009. "We are very satisfied with the result of the Conference, both regarding the number of participants and specially the high technical level of the presentations by demolition constructors and suppliers of demolition machinery", says General Manager Ms Henriette Thuen.

Following the EDA strategy of promoting and protecting the economic and political interests of the demolition industry, EDA Conferences has become platform to create network connections between contractors, suppliers of equipment and adjacent industries. As Mr Yves Canessa, President of the EDA pointed out in Nice, "our aim is to work to establish common European standards and the discussions during the Conferences are an obvious way to create a common voice for the European Demolition Industry".

DANISH REPRESENTATIVE TO DISCUSS BEST PRACTICE CONCERNING PCB
After the General Assembly 2009, on the 5th of June, where the Annual Report for 2008 presented by President Canessa was approved, the Conference was opened by Danish company representative, Mr Lars B. Sørensen from Brandis A/S who together with Mr Ole Geisler from Danish Environmental Analysis made a presentation of the best practice in PCB management in demolition.

DEMOLITION MANUFACTURES TAKING THE PULSE OF THE MARKET
Company presentations from all over Europe introduced delegates to the latest de-velopments in the demolition industry in fields such as chimney demolition by Ger-man Mr Reiner Cremer, from Jörg Mende Schornsteinbau GmbH or oil rig's decom-missioning by British Mr John Woodward, from C&D Consultancy. Also suppliers and equipment producers were present introducing their state of the art developments for the demolition industry and taking good note of what demolition contractors all around Europe are demanding in the market.

MORE FAIR COMPETITION IN THE EUROPEAN DEMOLITION INDUSTRY
Another issue which is high on the agenda is the unfair competition in demolition works. Demolition contractors and suppliers of machinery analysed together causes and effects of unfair competition on demolition works and proposed initiatives for a more fair demolition market in Europe. A paper containing the summary of initiatives proposed both at National and at European level will be soon available at the EDA website. www.eda-demolition.com

NEXT STEP IN THE EDA HIGH REACH GUIDE
Another highlight at the Conference was the presentation by Mr Stefano Panseri, Chairman of the EDA Technical Committee, of the draft of the EDA High Reach Guide. As in EDA Autumn Conference 2008 in Istanbul, the EDA draft on High Reach Guide catalysed a debate with Mark Anthony, one of the authors of the NFDC guide produced a couple of years ago. An agreement was reached to compare both guides and work towards improvements of mutual benefit. All participants and members of the EDA were officially invited to contribute to the further development of the draft in order to be included in the final version of the EDA High Reach guide to be published before the end of the year. A special space in the EDA website will be created in order to send comments to Mr Stefano Panseri.

Due to the high sensibility of the information regarding the EDA High Reach and other projects and innovative products presented in Nice, it has been decided to publish all information about Nice Conference, including the draft of the High Reach Guide into the restricted area of EDA website. www.eda-demolition.com. Some of the presentations made at Nice will not even be available on line, following instruc-tions from the companies involved.

EDA GENERAL ASSEMBLY AND SPRING CONFERENCE 2010 IN POLAND
The EDA Board Meeting which met prior to the Conference decided that the next EDA General Assembly and Spring Conference will take place in Poland between 27th and 30th May 2010. The name of the city is still to be decided. The choice of venue will depend on conference facilities, flight connections as well as options for a good social and cultural programme. The final decision will be published on EDA website in September 2009.
